| Guillermo Silva-Marin was
instrumental and key player in the recent revival of a
legendary Canadian operetta of 1889. LEO, THE ROYAL
CADET made its
long awaited return to the Canadian stage with new
orchestration by composer John Greer and a revised
libretto by dramaturge Virginia Reh. Performances in
Toronto and Kingston in May 2001 met with artistic and
critical acclaim. LEO, THE ROYAL CADET was hailed as
Toronto Operetta Theatre's finest hour. His direct involvement as dramatic advisor in Opera in Concert's ARIODANTE was equally rewarding. The second installment of a Handel trilogy, after ALCINA in 1999 confirmed the extraordinary appeal of baroque opera. Handel's SEMELE will follow in 2002. Guillermo Silva-Marin had a resounding success as stage director of Opera McGill's LE NOZZE DI FIGARO in Montreal in January 2001. The stylistic presentation of Mozart's masterpiece had an excellent young cast for four sold-out performances. Opera McGill also saw Silva-Marin's conceptualizations of Donizetti's L'ELISIR D'AMORE and Hugo Weisgall's SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR. As General Director and stage director for the Toronto Operetta Theatre he has also seen a recent string of successes: Lehar's THE MERRY WIDOW, Johann Strauss' DIE FLEDERMAUS, Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS PINAFORE and Imre Kalman's THE GYPSY PRINCESS. Following Summer Opera Lyric Theatre's productions of Puccini's LA BOHEME and Samuel Barber's VANESSA, Guillermo Silva-Marin returns to Opera McGill in Montreal for Handel's SEMELE and a staged concert presentation of Verdi's FALSTAFF. Toronto Operetta Theatre demands his attention in 2002 for Romberg's THE STUDENT PRINCE and Gilbert & Sullivan's PIRATES OF PENZANCE as well as THE MIKADO for Chorus Niagara. |
